The building has to look rigid, built. It’s not going anywhere, thus the character of the lines can be as smooth as possible. And more, the proportions of a building’s components are familiar enough that they feel symmetrical even when they’re not.

Ry Cooder's LA

Ry Cooder’s story set in Los Angeles carried tremendous imagery. The narrator of the story goes from place to place on the long-lost Red Car of LA, which must have travelled at the same speeds as the trolleys in San Francisco, (so not very fast). Yet I imagine that for the die-hard, pompous narrator, they were like the LA freeways of today. The link between red cars and freeways brought to mind the experience of being in Los Angeles. Experiencing the city is another way of saying, “driving,” and in every single one of these drives, you feel that distances don’t matter. It’s the traffic and the speed, with everything about LA from the shabby colors, the flat buildings, and the dirty atmosphere (i.e. everything that makes it the best damn place) is in constant motion. I thought, “what would it be like to move through LA in a fast but not-so-fast speed, not having to worry about hitting other cars or pedestrians?” You’d see the colors move into one another even if the lines of the buildings do in fact register. And you’d be smiling the whole ride.

Cenote

Cenotes are some of the few sources of fresh water in the Yucatán peninsula, a fact that explains their sacredness to the Mayans. As such, it is a symbolic source of life that I wanted to demonstrate in this piece. This semester saw me grow in a way embodied by the phrase, “let it go.” For long, I held on to identities that ironically led to struggle, so letting go was indirectly a source of rejuvenation. This feeling was present in the week of the Cenote theme – strong enough to brightly color my imagination a few weeks after the original drawing was stolen. The image is exactly as I remember it (which does not mean that it’s an exact replica) except for the silhouette of the man who has finally begun to let go. His outline is more pronounced and the colors and brushstrokes are more varied. I wished to give the man more contrast in relation to the surrounding scene, a field of energy that I picture when I see the bright blues and greens of a cenote. The green strokes needed to be fluid in order to capture energy moving through water.
